Potential Health Effects

Hazard information based on health hazards of the general class of chemicals consisting of quinidines and quinines.

Inhalation:
May cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing and shortness of breath. Can be route for absorption in the body. See ingestion.
Ingestion:
Affects the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. Produces lethargy, drowsiness, irritability, ringing in the ears, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and hot flushed skin. Allergic responses, including skin rashes and drug fever may occur. Large doses can produce heart and respiratory failure.
Skin Contact:
Mild irritant to skin. May have some absorption. Sensitivity reactions can occur.
Eye Contact:
May cause irritation, redness and pain.
Chronic Exposure:
May produce central nervous system depression which may lead to cardiac and respiratory dysfunction.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with prior nervous system, cardiac or respiratory problems may be more susceptible to this substance. Some individuals are very sensitive to this substance. Sensitization from previous exposures are not uncommon, but rarely life threatening.

4. First Aid Measures

Inhalation:
Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.
Ingestion:
Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention.
Skin Contact:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Get medical attention if irritation develops.
Eye Contact:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire:
As with most organic solids, fire is possible at elevated temperatures or by contact with an ignition source.
Explosion:
Fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source is a potential dust explosion hazard.
